Hey everybody! I hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather we’re having…I guess since I’m talking about weather I must have nothing to talk about right? Wrong! I’ve been at WPPI all this week having a great time with thousands of other photographers in seminars and trade shows. It’s over for me now but I had a lot of fun. I got to listen to one of my favorite portrait photographers speak this morning (William McIntosh from Virginia). I really enjoyed that.
My absolute favorite WPPI moment this week was on Monday morning when I was in a seminar and they were showing a slideshow of wedding albums. The slide appeared on the screens and it was a nice portrait of a bride getting ready. It was beautiful, no doubt, but nothing out of the ordinary. In a crowd of 1200 people only ONE voice could be heard at that moment the slide came up and it was directly behind me.
“WOW!” he boldly proclaimed while realizing he was the only person in the room of 1200 with the artistic vision to see it’s amazing, one of a kind qualities.
I bet he felt like he wanted all of the MGM to come crashing down on him so he couldn’t be seen, kind of like how you did back in junior high school when it was 30 minutes into the class and the teacher said your name, “Nathan…”and you replied, “HERE!”
Anyway, I had a great time at the convention and hope you’re all having a great week. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to my retouching. Don’t forget to listen to this when you get a chance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYSPEYWFU10

Look at this photograph…

I was so excited to find this spot that I had to do a family portrait there!
Sheila scheduled our session for Saturday, February 27th. We were both thrilled about the location I had scouted out. On the way up the mountain however, the weather took a turn and showered us with snow and wind. The sky was dark and gray and gloomy, like something you see from a Tim Burton movie. We held out on hope and tried to convince ourselves that it would be fun and make for some fun portraits but we were kidding ourselves.
We made the decision to go to a new location. I’m not going to lie, my excitement level for the session wasn’t following me back down from the top of the mountain. I was so excited for this view! “Oh well,” I thought, “We’ll find a nice spot nearby.”
We did! The weather was beautiful once we we had finished our descent. I had a wonderful time with a great family and Mt. Charleston’s not going anywhere.

Today I went and photographed two business headshots for www.GESNevada.com and it’s amazing how at least once a week I hear a common joke said to photographers. As I was packing up my equipment and walking out the door, someone peaked into the room and said, “Nobody broke the camera, huh?” I smiled and said, “Nope, it still works.” I don’t mind this joke. In reality, I love to hear it because I think I’m going to start a tally and then at the end of the year I can count how many times it was said to me in a year. Heck I might even make a few flow charts or something to see if there’s a pattern of it being said from month to month. hahaha Anyway, here’s my wedding announcement that’s being sent in the mail soon.

Admit it, you’re happy for me.
Back to work!

So last weekend my girlfriend Kendra and I went up to my Dad’s house in New Harmony, Utah. Earlier when it was dark we set up my camera and opened the shutter and ran out into the darkness with a flashlight and made some fun stuff. Such as….

Here’s me harnessing ultimate power…

Lightsabre battle…
After taking a break, we went inside with my sister and her husband and their baby and along with my Dad, we all played a game of Mad Gab. If you’ve never played it, get it so you can understand my love/hate relationship with the game. I was becoming ansty and took Kendra outside again for some more flashlight painting fun but I had something else in mind.
“Let’s play a game. I’ll go out there and write a question then you answer it.” She agreed and the plan was underway! I tried to throw her off at first by asking something simple:

That’s supposed to say, “How old are you?”
She answered with her flashlight something unreadable so I moved onto the next question:

“Love me?”
She answered:

I moved onto the big one…

“Marry me?”
I walked back to her standing by my camera as she looked at the screen with a grin. Without saying a word she grabbed the flashlight, walked off into the darkness and painted:

“Of course”
Cool huh?
I’m engaged everybody! January 23rd, 2010. See you there!
